Wild rice (Zizania palustris) is the only cereal native to North America. The grain was historically harvested and eaten in both North America and China. Native Americans and others harvest wild rice by canoeing into wild rice plants, and bending the ripe grain heads with two small wooden sticks in order to thresh the seeds into the canoe. Several Native American cultures call this plant manoomin, meaning “good berry”.
Greenfields Agriculture Corporation (Greenfields) is one of the major wild rice harvesters and exporters in the province of Saskatchewan in Canada. Saskatchewan produces approximately 80% of lake wild rice in the world. Greenfields has approximately 2,000 acres licensed wild rice fields in seventeen lakes in Northern Saskatchewan. Our wild rice is naturally grown without any fertilizers and chemicals. Furthermore, our wild rice is organic certified.
